About Cyprus

Cyprus, an exotic island in the waters of Mediterranean, is the third biggest island in the region after the Italian islands of Sicily and Sardinia. Cyprus is located to the south of Turkey and west to Lebanon. Cyprus is a hot weathered sunny touristic destination where temperatures of atmosphere and sea water starts inclining from the month of April and reaches its peak of 40+ degrees in the month of August each year. Geo politically, Cyprus is subdivided into two parts. The Republic of Cyprus, which is internationally recognized government, occupies the southern two-thirds of the island. The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus also known as TRNC (KKTC in Turkish language) occupies the northern third of the island and is recognized only by Turkey.

Usually, in winter temperatures are mild in towns, and snow rarely occurs in towns. However, almost every year you can find snow at the Trodos Mountains where some seasonal ski facilities also exists. On the other hand dust storms are frequent over the year in Cyprus. This comes in contrast with the Cypriot summers, where the temperature can reach over 40 degrees Celsius in towns.

Two major languages are spoken in Cyprus, Greek language is spoken in South Cyprus and Turkish is spoken in the North Cyprus while English is widely spoken in both North Cyprus and South Cyprus. Due to geopolitical division of the Island Greek language is official language for South Cyprus while Turkish language is set as official language for North Cyprus.

Even though the island is located close to the Middle East, it is a European country since 2004, and is a member of the European Union. Cyprus has two main harbors, in Limassol and in Larnaca and both of them serve cargo, passenger and cruise ships (mainly Limassol).
