Cyprus Traveling Guide and Some Useful Tips

It is very important that you should be aware of the local laws and customs before you travel to any part of the world. Cyprus is divided into two parts, Turkish  
Republic of Northern Cyprus and the Republic of Cyprus (South Cyprus). Due to the political and social tensions, here are some tips for visitors and tourists planning  
to travel to Cyprus.

Official name Republic of Cyprus or simply Cyprus is a beautiful island close to the southern coast of Turkey. Cyprus sees millions of tourists from around the globe each year. To understand better and for a good picture of Cyprus, some traveling tips are outlined for our readers so they can enjoy their stay in this beautiful part of heaven on earth. However it is very important to know that the Turkish administered northern part of the island refers to itself as Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus or TRNC or KKTC (Küzey Kibris Türk Cümhüriyet) and has its own rules and regulations for the northern part (North Cyprus).

  • Cyprus has a very low rate of crimes specially targeting foreigners is a very very rare scene. Like elsewhere you are advised to practice caution with your belongings in Public and leave all your valuables in a safe place with the authority be aware of that. Always stay in reputable good and known hotels.
  • Cyprus uses 240 volts power supply, a.c. 50Hz, 13 amp sockets and square pins in most of the buildings. Using an extension adopter, one may use more than one low current electric appliance from the same power supply point. For tourists, many of Cyprus hotels provide necessary adopters on request. For tourists, please do not purchase adopters from the market to be used in the hotel you are staying in, instead ask for a suitable adopter from the reception as precautions.
  • Hitch Hiking is not so much common in Cyprus. But Cypriot hospitality and friendly manners has encouraged it in recent years. Though it is a difficult mean of transportation in hot Cyprus summer. We advise Hikers to wear sunhats and sunglasses in summer. Always remember to keep to the left-hand side of the road. Driving in Cyprus moves on the left.
  • Photography of military and army bases and out pots is strictly prohibited including the UN zones. In such areas ask before you make any photographs.
  • Cyprus Government shows no tolerance towards drug trafficking, selling or using. No matter how small amount of narcotics found in your possession, you will be sentenced to prison and high amount of fine.
  • Though Cyprus has two main regions, Northern Cyprus half run by Turkish backed Cypriots also known as Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and the South Cyprus being run by Greek backed Cypriots knows as The Republic of Cyprus, both Cypriots and other foreign nationals specially the citizens of European Union can pass between the two parts of the country at recently opened crossing points.
  • In case of Emergency, please dial 199 for Police, Fire Brigade or any other Medical Service.
  • Though emergency treatment is free in Cyprus Government hospitals but we strongly recommend to our tourists to have their medical insurance before their arrival to Cyprus as Medical treatments are relatively high. One may be transferred to any private clinic after having the initial first aid. Many doctors do speak English in Cyprus.
  • An EU driving license is valid to drive in Cyprus if you are a tourist or visiting Cyprus for a short period of time. For long period of stay one must apply and gain a local driving license. Driving is strictly forbidden while being drunk or riding a two wheel vehicle such as motorbikes or scooters without wearing a helmet. Cyprus is an island and is a heaven for fun and vacation lovers tourists who enjoy 8 months of sun here on the sandy beaches and warm Mediterranean sea. Only enter the water where permitted for swimming.
  • Republic of Cyprus is a member of the European Union, thus nationals of European Union countries do not need a passport for an entry to the Island, other nationalities may need a passport and a valid visa provided by the relative embassy, General Consulate or the representatives of TRNC. Therefore it is advised to consult the Cyprus Embassy, Consulate or representative office if available before your departure from your home country.
